I learned that music is more than notes on a page; it is a way to interact and to share our feelings with others. Sample Essay #2Change has always been difficult for me. When I’m faced with a new situation, I usually tell myself that I can’t do it, it’s too hard or I’m not talented enough. In a sense, I’m my own worst critic. Luckily, I also have an overriding desire for achievement and success. I began to recognize these strengths and weaknesses when I was eleven years old during my first day as a member of a symphony orchestra. As I walked into the vast music hall filled with several hundred folding chairs and music stands, I felt my icy fingers clench the handle of my violin case.

Even though I’d passed the audition I was nervous and, to be honest, overwhelmed. Finding my seat in the back of the second violins, I glanced around me, not recognizing anyone. Standing in front of me was a husky woman with fiery red hair, the conductor Ms. Gerard, whom her students called Mary. Kind and gentle, Mary had a passion for teaching children how to play music. At last, practice started with the Gypsy Serenade. Unfortunately, at that moment, I realized I couldn’t play this music. I was trained in the Suzuki method, which does not teach sight or note reading. So, for the next few practices I quietly played a Suzuki etude while everyone else performed the Gypsy Serenade beautifully. I was too far away from Mary for her to hear me. After a month of this deception, I decided I’d had enough. I was going to quit and join the Suzuki Strings, a lower level ensemble for beginners. But I didn’t go through with my plan. Instead, I told my violin teacher, Ms. Coker, my dilemma. She reassured me that I could play with the symphony but it would take a lot of effort. She was true to her word. We worked so hard that I could actually see the notes each night as I went to sleep :

After a few weeks, I was ready to face my nemesis the Gypsy Serenade. As we began with its slow, somber melody, I realized I was playing with the ensemble! Finally, I felt like I belonged.I’m now the Principal of the 2nd violin section of the symphony. I thoroughly enjoy this position. I sit up in the front– in the thick of things- and have the pressure of the rest of the second violins resting on my shoulders. I also use my role as Principal to make sure that all new members get the personal attention and support I didn’t receive. In dealing with the situation again, I’d have asked for help sooner, whether it was from my private teacher, the conductor, or my family. This would have saved unneeded stress. I might have asked my parents for advice, or my friends.Being part of the symphony is one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done in my life. But more than that, it has shown me I can overcome my fear of change, and the critical evaluation I give myself. I’m confident that I can overcome obstacles in the future, as I have in the past.Playing the violin has taught me many qualities–dedication, leadership, friendship, time management, and a sense of passion that can only be relayed to me though the arts. I believe that these traits I’ve learned through being a musician will help me succeed through college and my life.
